On a course for growth with future markets: devolo AG celebrates its 10th anniversary

devolo celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Within a decade, the Aachen-based network specialist has evolved from a startup to the global market leader in the Powerline segment. The course to the future has been set: Today, more than 40 percent of personnel work in Research and Development. In this way, devolo focusses completely on innovations "Engineered in Germany" for the smart home and the energy networks of the future.

Great celebrations at devoloThe Aachen-based network specialist celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The company has developed over the past decade into a European Powerline specialist and has led this market since 2009, with meanwhile over 15 million products sold globally. 26 employees belonged to the founding team; today, more than 180 employees work at the Aachen location. In the past year, devolo had a turnover of approx. 122 million euros and, according to the German "manager magazin", is on the list of the 1,000 German world market leaders (as of 9/2010).

devolo AG: From startup to global market leader

After its founding, devolo initially entered the market as a network specialist, with a wide portfolio of all common products in this category. A high rate of growth was achieved through the successive focus on dLAN® Powerline technology, simple networking via household power lines. The current adapter generation, dLAN® 500, provides a transmission rate of up to 500 Mbps and thus outperforms a classic cable network (fast Ethernet).

The smart home of the future speaks dLAN®

The future speaks dLAN®: Ever more electronic devices in the house now can be digitally controlled and networked. What began with the connection of computers and network-compatible devices today provides for a seamless communication of IT, consumer electronics and smart home applications such as roller shutters, light controls and digital power meters. Through simple retrofit installation in any building type and thanks to its high stability, dLAN® is the ideal backbone for the smart home of the future.

Focus on development and patented technologies

devolo has always seen itself as a researching company, in which development plays a central role. Through membership in the renowned IEEE consortium, the Powerline specialist took part in the development of the IEEE 1901 standard, for example. In-house developments, such as the Dynamic PowerSave technology for particularly energy-efficient operation of the dLAN® Powerline adapter, make the product range stand out.

Powerline solutions for household customers, companies, B2B & energy providers Today, devolo offers its powerline products and solutions for a wide variety of markets. Alongside the classic end customer segment, it has also addressed commercial use, for example in trade shops, production or digital signage, with dLAN® PROFESSIONAL. As part of the European DLC-VIT4IP project, devolo is also active in the narrowband Powerline technology area. Here, data for energy providers and measuring point operators is transferred over the mains grid between transformer stations and households. A first project with Vattenfall Europe was recently concluded successfully.

On a course for growth with future markets devolo‘s strategy for the future is based on the growth of two markets. For one, integrated solutions for the smart home of the future will be ever more important. Here, a stable, simple-to-retrofit digital backbone is needed. dLAN® provides the ideal basis, because other communication technologies such as wireless LAN or Z-Wave are easy to integrate. The energy revolution opens up the other big market for devolo. The decentralised structure of the energy network of the future requires internal network communication. This is the ideal field for narrowband Powerline, the real-time data connection between producers and consumers."In the last ten years, devolo has developed from a network device manufacturer to the European specialist for Powerline technology," remarks Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG. "In the meantime, we address all relevant markets in this segment, for example, narrowband technology, B2B, and classic end customer products. A large part of devolo‘s success is due to the passion and dedication of its employees. My thanks go to all colleagues that have worked for this success - and particularly to our customers!"
